Reference Librarian

York University Libraries is seeking an energetic, creative librarian to work in the business and Government Publications Library, located in the Schulich School of Business. Presently, the Library has business reference resources and periodicals, as well as collections of documents from Canadian federal, provincial, municipal, foreign governments and international organizations, and data sets from both government and business sources. In the Fall of 2003, a new library devoted to business will open in a new faculty facility. (The main government documents collection is moving to another library.) The Library’s mission is to play a key role in meeting the research and academic business information needs of growing and developing Schulich School of Business and Atkinson Faculty of Liberal & Professional Studies Administrative Studies programs as well as business-related studies in other York Faculties. The Library has been a leader in distributing access to information to its user community and in supporting the information with training and instruction for many faculties and disciplines.

York University is the third largest university in Canada, serving a population of approximately 50,000 students from diverse cultures. The Schulich School of Business offers wide-ranging business education programs to prepare graduates to successfully manage in private, public and non-profit organizations. With Canada’s first international MBA (IMBA) and a new International BBA (IBBA), Schulich is a global business school featuring multiple strategic partnerships worldwide.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will provide in-depth reference and research assistance in business fields such as economics, accounting, marketing, finance, management science, and organizational behaviour to undergraduate, graduate students, and faculty. The librarian works with colleagues in developing and managing the collections that support these disciplines within the context of an interdisciplinary research environment and actively promotes library collections and services to faculty with special liaison responsibilities for various aspects of business programs. The Library’s professional staff engage in library instruction and outreach. They offer individual research consultations and develop a proactive outreach program that includes course-integrated instruction for undergraduates and graduate students, in the classroom and on the Web. The successful candidate will ensure full identification and integration of reliable electronic resources and datasets into services and collections; closely coordinate collection development with other subject specialists; prepare print and online user guides and Web pages; and instruct library staff, students and faculty in the use of business databases, including numeric ones. The librarian participates in library and university committees and contributes to librarianship and scholarship by carrying out professional research and/or scholarly work.

Qualifications required: ALA accredited MLS or equivalent. Educational background in business or the liberal arts. A minimum of two years but not more than 5 years successful reference experience in a business or business-related environment. Knowledge of print and electronic resources in business, economics and finance. Collection development experience. Demonstrated success in library liaison and outreach activities. Proven ability to provide instruction in varied teaching environments. Demonstrated skill with web page creation. Demonstrated successful experience in providing reference and instructional support for financial and economic electronic datasets. Knowledge of and ability to work with standard statistical packages to make data available in appropriate file formats. Demonstrated ability to use dataset documentation in electronic formats. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, both oral and written, and proven ability to work effectively as part of a team with a commitment to public service. Interest in library and university committee responsibilities and ability to manage a diverse workload. A flexible and innovative approach to problem solving.

This is a continuing appointment position (tenure track) to be filled at the Assistant Librarian level and appropriate for a librarian with up to 5 years experience following completion of the MLS degree. The anticipated salary level is mid to high 50s depending on experience. All positions at York University are subject to budgetary approval. This position is included in the York University Faculty Association bargaining unit. Librarians at the Business and Government Publications Library are required to work regularly scheduled evenings and weekends.
